B. YOUTH REHABILITATION

Our program brings youth at New Beginnings out of the facility to engage in a daily relationship of service with an injured raptor, being responsible and accountable for the health, daily care and reconditioning of the bird, and ultimately for its successful release. The timeframe for this serious commitment occurs during the last 3 to 6 months of the young person’s sentence served. The relationship will be closely monitored and guided by raptor experts to ensure safety and success. We will see the positive impacts when we have been able to implement the program. We feel we can predict the following positive outcomes:

  • Heightened self awareness and self confidence
  • Newfound ability to make a difference and affect positive change, as conservationist and earth steward, with knowledge and resources
  • Cultivation of reliability, accountability, responsibility and trust worthiness as they work with raptors, being counted on for daily monitoring and recording of status of birds
  • Development of compassion or more developed sense of ‘other’
